This is a site to help some people who are not familiar with Amelia Island living.
Amelia Island was a small town back in the days.
Its main industry was fishing and making a living on the water.
There some paper mills on the island that employed many people who lived on the island and the surrounding areas.
The more that people found out about this small gem the more people seemed to travel there.
The island is one of the outer banks along the east coast, it is the very last island within the outer banks.
North of the island is Cumberland Island which has a rich history with 6the wealthy of the early 20th century.
It is just across the channel which can be seen from downtown.
Cumberland Island is a national Seashore which has some very interesting history with people with money.
Wild horses run wild on the island and there are some very fortunate people whom live there.
Downtown was thriving fishing port in the early days where fishing and shrimping were at a level no other fishing village could compare to at one time.
The shrimp festival was born from the shrimping industry which was booming in the early days.
Not until people learned to farm raise shrimp did the industry start thinning out.
But believe me that farm raised shrimp holds nothing to wild caught shrimp except the price of cost.
The festival happens every year the next festival being in the first of May on the 3rd.
There is a parade which is very entertaining for all!
Along with arts and crafts and lots of food vendors with mostly seafood to purchase.
There is also a shrimp boat race to see who has the fastest boat.
Even though times have changed there is always a small town feeling about Amelia Island.
It is a good place to do many things if you are into nature!
